The Unofficial Run
Ever looked out from the Knob Chair and wondered why there isn't a trail that runs near The Saddle allowing you to access the beautiful powder on the lower face of Marmot 2? Turns out there is – it's called the High Traverse! You won't find this elusive trail on our trail map however, as it can pose a challenge for avalanche control and therefore it's rarely open. In fact, it has only been open in 6 seasons over the past 17 years! If you're lucky enough to have had the chance to ski it, you'll know why this is an awesome opportunity you'll want to jump on.
The High Traverse is more than just an unknown run; there is a history to it that the avid Marmot Basin skiers from back in the day will know about. Back in the early days of Marmot Basin, long before the Ridge Chair was constructed in the 2001/02 season, the High Traverse trail was the main access point to the coveted Eagle Ridge area. In order to relish in the powder-filled and untamed off-piste that we now have easy access to, the hardcore skiers would head up the Knob Chair and make the trek all the way across the north face of Marmot 2 until they reached Cornice. From there, with a little hike, they would be able to enjoy Eagle Ridge.

Challenging but Rewarding
So what's so special about this run nowadays? Well for starters, it gives you a unique perspective of Marmot Peak, The Saddle, the entire mid-mountain area and valley below. It's a special feeling when you get the chance to spend time in an area, knowing that so often it's inaccessible. One of the best parts, of course, has to be the fact that for the majority of seasons, most people eye the untouched powder but can't ski down it – well now is your chance. Simply head up the Knob Chair, head left and down a few meters until you reach the gate – welcome to the High Traverse! Ski the traverse as long or as little as you like until you find the perfect powder run for you to drop in to – enjoy!
