Aloha Cup 2019

On April 20th, groups of people donning Hawaiian shirts, leis and grass skirts were spotted heading towards Marmot Basin. To the uninformed bystander, it would’ve appeared that these folks were destined for a hot vacation. However, once the Hawaiian-clad group started strapping on their skis and snowboards, it was evident they were ready for the signature event known as the Aloha Cup.

Aloha Cup 2019

The Beloved Hawaiian-themed Race

This long-standing annual event is a springtime favourite driving participants from all over to Marmot Basin. Untraditional by nature, the race was born as a way to encourage first time racers to get introduced to the sport in a relaxed and fun environment. The course features rollers, banked turns and small jumps allowing for a fun ride that still provides enough challenge for all ages and levels. Racers ditch the skin-tight polyester race suits in lieu of more comfortable floral shirts, grass skirts and the odd coconut bra. With two attempts at the non-traditional course, racers gave the course their best shot and hoped to walk away with the fastest time.

Sunny, Lively and Gratifying

The colourful attire wasn’t the only vibrant part of the day thanks to sunny weather and mid-mountain DJ’s. As participants gathered at the top of Tranquilizer welcomed by the sound of the Beach Boys and other ‘surf rock’ tunes, the sky was blue and the sun was shining. Surrounded by inflatable palm trees at the start line, racers sprung down the course on a day where sharp edges proved to be an advantage. Between race attempts, participants cruised the area and enjoyed the mid-mountain party featuring DJ’s from Bass Mountain. When the race drew to a conclusion, every participant received a prize thanks to the generous support of the local ski shops in Jasper, Edmonton and industry partners.
